IP Addresses

What is my IP address and why do I have one?

Every computer connecting to the internet has an IP Address, just like telephones have phone numbers and homes have street addresses. Generally, your IP address is assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your IP address is not something your ISP shares with you. It is usually not needed unless you are setting up a wireless network at home or giving someone a remote connection to your computer. If you need your IP address to set up a wireless network or if someone you know needs to remotely access your computer to help you fix a problem, you can find it by clicking on this link to the What is my IP Address web site.

You can also look up the owner of an IP address, such as an ISP or a web page hosting company. You may want to do this if you are receiving harassing emails or your anti-virus software alerts you that someone has made attempts to hack into your computer. Generally, you will want to contact your own ISP if you are receiving these types of problems. However, you may send a complaint to the owner of the offending IP Address. For privacy reasons, IP addresses can only be traced to IP Address owners, such as ISPs, and cannot be traced to individuals. For additional IP Address Resources, see the next section below.
